Lyrics
The Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain,
And the Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the spout again!

Activities

*  As you sing the song, run your fingers up your child's back as though you are a spider for line 1, stroke down your child's back to imitate rain in line 2, show the sun coming out with your hands fanning for line 3, and then run your fingers up your child's back for the last line.

*  Alternative actions are to wiggle your fingers in the air to imitate a spider's legs in line 1, and to depict the rain coming down from the sky with your fingers in line 2.

*  You can also add the following sound effects to the end of each line: line 1 - brrrrrrr (ascending in pitch); line 2 - bshhhhh; line 3 - ahhh (ascending in pitch); line 4 - brrrrrr (ascending in pitch)

* Teach your child to count to eight by counting the legs on the spider on the colouring page.

* Point to the events on the colouring page as you sing.

Interesting Facts
This song is also known as "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and there are various alternative versions of the words and melody.  Some people think the water spout is the spout on  a teapot or watering can.  The song could be interpreted as an allegory in which the spider is a person being pushed down by society in the form of rain, but that good overcomes evil in the form of the sun coming out and therefore the spider is able to continue to climb upwards.
