I really struggled with breastfeeding the first time around and only lasted five weeks due to extremely sore nipples, mastitis, and difficulty with exclusively expressing. During those five weeks, I was so exhausted, I didn't really have the energy to deal with weight loss after the birth. I had felt quite ill during my pregnancy and could only feel a little better if I ate a lot of potatoes, cheese, and chocolate. I didn't do that much exercise because I was so exhausted after work each day, so I put on quite a lot of weight.
A week after stopping breastfeeding, I decided to put myself on a strict diet, because I no longer had any excuse to keep eating a lot. I made sure I ate protein in every meal, otherwise I would feel hungry and want to eat cakes or biscuits in between. I usually ate a poached egg on toast for breakfast and drank an espresso coffee with a small amount of milk. At lunchtime, I would eat fish paste or marmite sandwiches, possibly with soup. At dinner time, I tried to eat meals with lean meat or fish with a small amount of potatoes and lots of veg. If I felt like eating chocolate, I would eat some dried apricots. It was hard for a few days, but I really started to enjoy it.
I also did a huge amount of walking to get my baby to sleep. I would often walk to a coffee shop to get a skinny latte as a treat. This was expensive, but I felt I deserved it with all the sleepless nights. I often went to buggyfit classes with my baby as well, and enjoyed meeting and making friends there.
By five months, I could get into my pre-pregnancy clothes again, and by eleven months I was thinner than I had been for years. I didn't want to lose any more weight though because I would have become too skinny.
I didn't stick to the diet after that and gradually crept back up to my pre-pregnancy weight. It took me a couple of years of trying to conceive and a couple of miscarriages before I got properly pregnant again. I went to see a chinese doctor for help, and he gave me acupuncture, dietary advice (balanced diet with no snacks between meals) and herbs, and I believe that is why my second daughter is here today.
I ate a lot during my second pregnancy, about four proper meals a day, all with meat in them, which is unlike me. I didn't put as much weight on as I did in my first pregnancy, but since I breastfed for four calendar months, I didn't really diet during that time. I tried to avoid snacking, but my older daughter needs trips out, and sometimes the only thing to do is to go to a cafe. She always wants a cake, and I share it with her to avoid her eating too much sugar...
The weight gradually came off during breastfeeding, but started to come off more rapidly when I stopped. I am now on a strict diet similar to the one I was on after stopping breastfeeding my first child. I will let you know when I can get into my jeans again! A good chocolate substitution I have discovered since having my first baby are Goodies oaty bars.
